still discovering brooklyn.

even though i have lived in my neighborhood in brooklyn for a little over a year, there are always new places to go to or old places i have yet to try.
shane and i wanted a nice meal on tuesday and he was craving oysters. we decided to try convivium osteriea, on 5th ave in park slope. the place had always been intriguing, small dark, very rustic. we weren't even really sure what was on the menu but decided to give it a try.

we weren't sure if the restaurant was even open when we first walked in - it was completely empty and it took about 3 minutes for someone to greet us from the back. after he never came back to seat us, it just seemed a little strange, and we decided to leave.

off to a new place.
we walked down 5th ave and came across moutarde, a quaint french bistro. it kind of had a look of a very less crowded and scenster schillers.

shane didn't get oysters.

but he did have escargot. i tried. it was actually pretty good!

my entree was salmon and goat cheese pillows with potatoes au gratan. i loved the potatoes!

shane had cod with a yummy side of butternut squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes. sounds like "fall" food but it was still nice!

on our way back to my apartment, we came across a new bar that just opened up on union, just off of 5th ave. i don't know why i didn't notice it before, i guess i usually walk on the other side of the street. it is union hall. it looked nice, so we decided to check it out. inside was warm and friendly, not annoyingly hipster and loud and obnoxious. you felt like you were walking into your grandparents big library. they had lots of comfortable seating and the walls were stacked to the ceiling with books. basically, a good neighborhood bar.

this dog looked right at home, laying on the rug.
we sat at the long wooden bar to have a drink. the bartender was even nice. not "too-cool" like the jerk at the stupid cherry tree that recently opened near me on 4th ave.
other winning points about union hall:
  • good juke box
  • they serve food
  • the have a space in the lower level for live music
  • nice, clean, and abundant bathrooms
  • and bocce ball!!! who has bocce ball in a bar! i have never played but i think i might just start!

must learn bocce!!!

definitely will be back!

the night was going so well, but took a turn for the worst...

i woke up to being violently ill! i was basically laying on the bathroom floor until 3 the next afternoon! ugh!! i haven't felt like that in a loooong time! and i hate throwing up! (ok, well, who really likes it. but i really really hate it!)
i hate to say that it was the fish from dinner because we really loved the meal, but i think that is what it had to be.

i'll still eat a moutarde again! a little bulimia never hurt anyone!!

I know you really hate to throw up - the first time was when you about 5 and you sat there with your head in toilet all the time praying to God not to let you throw up!! Sooo Sad!! And then when you got older you would call to go in and hold your hair back and when I did you'd yell at me not to touch you and get out - go figure! Poor Shane!
